Myths & Truths about Dyslexia

Did you know that Speech Pathologists are well placed to provide intervention in the area of reading and spelling? Miss Tanya recently presented a refresher to the team about Dyslexia. Many myths still float around about the nature of dyslexia. So, what IS it? Many people think it is reading backwards or words floating all over the page, however it is NOT a visual problem, it is actually rooted in the SOUNDS of language! Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling.  Characteristic features of dyslexia are difficulties in phonological awareness, verbal memory and verbal processing speed.
